Aada Aho from TYY elected to the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) for 2026

Aada Aho was elected to the SYL Board at the General Assembly held on 14–15 November.

In 2025, Aho has served on TYY’s Executive Board, with responsibilities in social policy, international affairs, environment, and equality.

In addition to Aho, the following people were elected to SYL’s 2026 Board: Petra Pulli (HYY) as Chair, and Marcell Berta (AYY), Emilia Enroth (ISYY), Laura Heino (TREY), Viena Pentikäinen (HYY), and Vilma Sippola (OYY) as Board Members.

TYY’s Chair, Josefina Tuomala, finished second in a tight chairperson race.

TYY was represented at SYL’s General Assembly by a group of 36 participants: 17 with voting rights, 17 deputy members, and 2 observers.

In addition, the General Assembly published a policy statement calling for secure livelihoods for students. Student benefits must be reformed as part of the social security reform. Where applicable, they should be aligned with basic social security benefits and transferred under the administrative branch of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.

"Financial security must not be an obstacle to education. Society has a responsibility towards students whose safety nets are already weaker. International students, in particular, must be more broadly included in the support system", declares Pulli.

The General Assembly also decided on next year’s action plan and SYL’s finances. SYL represents all approximately 150,000 university students in Finland.
