TYY is looking for student members to the Faculty Councils for the term starting on 1 January 2024 and ending on 31 December 2025. The Faculty Councils are a central location for the promotion of student interests and the highest decision-making body of the faculties.
The remit of the Faculty Councils includes developing teaching and research in the faculty, drafting proposals for action plans, financial plans and annual budgets, deciding on the guidelines for the allocation of the resources granted to the faculty, approving the curricula, drafting a proposal for the number of new students to be admitted to the faculty each year, and deciding on the admission criteria. One third of the members consists of students.
The application period for the student member positions begins on Monday, 18 September 2023. You can stand as a candidate for membership by filling in an electronic form found on the TYY website (www.tyy.fi) by Tuesday, 17 October 2023 at 23:59. The Student Union's Election Committee will prepare a proposal to TYY's Executive Board on who is to be elected. In addition, a statement on the applicants will be requested from the subject or faculty organisations representing the students of the faculties or departments in question. TYY’s Executive Board will make the decision on the student representatives in November after the proposal has been circulated for comment.
When selecting the student members for the Faculty Councils, attention is paid to factors such as previous experience on organisations, university administration and advocacy work, motivation and commitment to the task, the statement received from the faculty or subject organisation, balanced representation of the faculty's departments and programs, and a balanced gender distribution for student representatives on the Council.
According to TYY's regulation on the election of student representatives, eligibility is limited to individuals with the right to complete a bachelor's degree, master's degree, licentiate degree, or doctoral degree, or a specialist degree in medicine or in dentistry at the University of Turku. In addition, a prerequisite for eligibility is that the student has registered as attending. However, persons who are full-time employees of the university as defined by the University Regulation on Elections are not eligible.
According to the aforementioned TYY regulation, the number of student representative posts in the university's administration is limited to three posts per person. This entry is intended to ensure a balanced distribution of the posts.
TYY emphasises transparency and equality in its activities. We hope to receive applications from many people with different backgrounds.
