The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY) has received a new money collection permit, enabling students to support the work of the John Nurminen Foundation to protect the Baltic Sea.
TYY members can make a donation to the Foundation when paying their membership fee. Donations are entirely voluntary, and the total amount collected depends on how many members choose to participate.
John Nurminen Foundation – Saving the Baltic Sea
Founded in 1992, the purpose of the John Nurminen Foundation is to save the Baltic Sea and its heritage for future generations. The Foundation’s projects improve the status of the Baltic Sea by reducing the nutrient load and environmental problems, such as eutrophication and nature loss, faced by the sea. The Foundation’s tasks also include safeguarding, celebrating and communicating the stories and cultural heritage of the Sea. The work is steered by measurable results and impact. The Foundation’s operations are mainly funded by donations and grants. www.johnnurmisensaatio.fi/en/
Why the John Nurminen Foundation?
The John Nurminen Foundation was selected as a donation recipient because its work strongly supports TYY’s values and strategic objectives, particularly in the areas of sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
At the core of the Foundation’s work is the protection of the Baltic Sea through concrete measures. Its projects reduce nutrient runoff, combat eutrophication, and restore marine environments. For example, dozens of farms have committed to implementing water conservation measures in the Archipelago Sea, and extensive former peat production areas have been restored into bogs and wetlands, supporting biodiversity.
The Foundation also works to strengthen marine biodiversity. Its projects have restored eelgrass meadows, transplanted tens of thousands of plant cuttings, and improved coastal habitats affected by eutrophication by removing nutrients.
In addition, the Foundation actively works to reduce emissions from shipping and seeks to influence decision‑making at both national and international levels.
The measurable impact and concrete results of this work make the Foundation a reliable and effective recipient for student donations. At the same time, its activities are closely linked to the well‑being of the Archipelago Sea and the Baltic Sea, which are important to many students.
Donations as part of the membership fee
Donations are made through the Oili system when paying the TYY membership fee. In addition to the John Nurminen Foundation, members can donate to TYY’s long-standing cause, the Finland Somalia Network.
The total amount donated depends directly on how much students choose to give.
