Summer is on its way, the best time of the year. Since we are living in Finland, warm days with clear sky and sunshine are not that common. That’s why every opportunity has to be taken to the fullest when it comes, everyday counts! Days are long and if you are not travelling abroad there is a plenty of time to discover new places and events in Turku.
Turku being a historical city is full of stories from the past to tell and mystical things to reveal . That's why you can add to your bucket list some museums to visit at student friendly prices:
- Luostarinmäki handicraft museum
- Turku castle
- Wäinö Altonen museum
- Kylämäki village
- Pharmacy museum and Qwensel house
- Biological museum
- The old great square galleries
When it comes to the fun activities , what is better than being close water during the summer to splash, slide and swim? Kupittaa swimming pool is quite popular for this purpose and Samppalinna outdoor swimming pool which will reopen on the 1st of June this summer. Prices are quite cheap and one time entrance will cost only 3 euros with a student card.
For more excitement, there is JukuPark where you can hang out with your friends and enjoy riding different water slides at affordable student prices too. Not to forget about the beaches, which are always fun especially when is accessible with lifeguard, changing rooms, toilets, showers, shop and playing field. My recommendations for this summer are Saaronniemi, Ekvalla and Ispoinen beaches.
Since it is the music festivals season of the year, it is worth to mention the Finnish Sauna Festival starting from 15th -18th June. Located in the historical Turku castle park you can get closer to Finnish culture with the steamy saunas, music, designs and traditional food.
Moreover, the Medival Market in the Old Great Square is one of Turku's well known historical events. It will take you back in time by its vibes and atmosphere where you can find unique accessories to add to your collection, watch medieval circus and enjoy delicious traditional food. The event will take place from 29th June - 2nd July and there also a possibility to volunteer in organizing and be part of this event. For more info: Become a volunteer
And if you want to attend the most famous music festival in Turku, Ruisrock is the place to be. That's where you get to enjoy three days of music performed by famous international artists from all over the world surrounded by the beauty of nature in Ruissalo with 100,000 people. Headliners like Kygo, Martin Garrix, Sean Paul, Dj snake and more are performing this summer from 7th - 9th July.
Later in July , the biggest sailing event in Europe and biggest public event of the year in Finland will take place. The Tall Ships Races attracts around half a million visitors to Turku. So save the date from 20th- 23rd July since Turku will be hosting and you do not want to miss observing the aura river packed with beautiful ships with different colors and designs. What adds to the excitement is the potential participation of the president of Finland Sauli Niinistö as patron of the Tall Ships Races events. There will be also different activities evolving around the tall ships races with a focus on youth, internationality and the sense of community.
One final advice Is that you plan your summer wisely and mark your calendar with the hot events in town. Definitely Turku has plenty to offer so make sure you get the most of it together with your friends.
