Ehdolle TYYn edustajistovaaleissa 2015

In the elections for the Student Union Council on 3rd and 4th November 2015 and 26th – 29th October 41 representatives will be chosen among the eligible members of the TYY to the Council of the Student Union of the University of Turku.

All TYY members are eligible to be candidates in the elections. The easiest way to become a candidate is to contact one of the chiefs of coalitions. A coalition can be based on any common cause the candidates see fit. The best way to have an effect on the Student Union is to vote in the election or becoming a candidate.

Voting is easy: you can vote electronically on the Internet. The link for voting will be added on the election website during the elections.

The new Student Union Council will start its two-year term in January 2016. The Council is the highest decision-making authority in the Student Union and it decides on what the Student Union will do in each of the two years while in office. The slogan of the election for 2016 and 2017 is “Time to wake up”. In the last election the voting percentage was only 35 and we wish to increase it this year since the decisions of the Student Union Council affect all the students studying at the University of Turku.

What is Student Union Council?

The Student Union Council uses its power by determining how much money will be used and for what purposes. In other words, the Student Union Council approves the annual budget and decides what the Student Union will focus on during the year. During the year, the Student Union Council usually convenes once a month. The debates at the meetings can be as intense as in the real parliament. The Council decides on many issues that are very important from the point of view of the students.

The member of the Council should attend the monthly meetings and “evening schools”. The member should also get acquainted with the current issues for example with the members of one’s own list. The member’s duties usually take about ten hours a month.

How to apply?

TYY organises info event for candidates on Monday, 28 of September at 18-19 in Turku-Sali (Student House A, 2nd floor).  In the information event we share useful information about applying and campaign. Whether you have decided to apply or not, you are warmly welcome to join the info event.

Nominations must be made by Monday, 5 October at 12. The easiest way is to contact the preferred coalitions’ council elections coordinator. The list of coordinators can be seen here.

By voting or by becoming a candidate you have the opportunity to influence the University of Turku students’ affairs during the next two years.
