Kalervo Väänänen, the rector of the University of Turku from 2012 until 2019 has retired on 1 August. The student union wants to express its gratitude for Väänänen's work in favor of the university, by planting a silver maple tree near the building Educarium on 28 August at 13.00.

All the members of the student union and university staff are more than welcome to attend the planting ceremony.

"Rector Väänänen has been very interested in sustainability and in the role of universities in fighting climate change. A tree is not only a long-term, visible symbol for our gratitude but also works as a carbon sink, which is an appropriate way of thanking Väänänen for our cooperation and his care for the well-being of students," says Rauli Elenius, the secretary general of the student union.
