The Student Union of the University of Turku (TYY) nominates Johanna Pohjonen for the 2020 Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL). The Council of the Student Union chose Pohjonen as their nominee in their meeting of 20 September.
Johanna Pohjonen is a 27-year-old nursing science student and she has been on the 2019 Board of Student Union of the University of Turku. Academic affairs and working life are on her responsibility in this position of trust. Prior to her nursing science studies, Johanna graduated as a nurse and she has comprehensive working life skills. Johanna is eager to be building an equal, accessible and open community in higher education.
“I dream that everyone has equal opportunities to study regardless of their background. Education policy is the means by which to influence the matters that I find valuable, and therefore I am running for the 2020 Board of SYL”, says Johanna.
“Due to her background, Johanna has an insight into varying forms of education, which enables her to understand the diversity of studying and students. This, combined with her skill and will to question her opinions in order to learn, creates forward-looking education policy which acknowledges multiple viewpoints. This is very valuable especially when considering lifelong learning”, states Joni Kajander, TYY’s specialist on Academic Affairs.

The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) will choose the Chair and the Board of 2020 and decide on the finances and the operations of the Union in its General Assembly. The General Assembly will be held in Lahti from 15 to 16 of November.
