1. What is ELSA?

A. ELSA in a nutshell

The European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) is the world’s largest independent law students’ association with 40,000 members. It provides opportunities for international exchange, legal education and professional development for law students and young lawyers. It is based on the vision of a just world in which there is respect for human dignity and cultural diversity. You can find more about ELSA: http://elsa.org.

ELSA works on three different levels: ELSA International, which coordinates the organisation from Brussels, national ELSA groups (such as ELSA Finland) and local groups, such as ELSA Turku. ELSA operates mainly through its local groups, which are located in nearly 300 Law Faculties in 43 different countries. By the way, Turku’s own beloved child Anna Haipola is President of ELSA International Board in 2015-2016!

B. ELSA Turku – who we are

ELSA Turku organises ELSA events, STEP traineeships and shares information about ELSA happenings for its members in the area. The activities are mainly coordinated by ELSA Turku’s Board, which consists of eight annually selected members; President and seven Board members. There are also eight Directors who participate in ELSA Turku’s daily business as profoundly as the Board members. However, ELSA would be nothing without its members and therefore we need you to participate in our activities, create new events and become members of organising committees!

Examples of events that ELSA Turku has recently organised are Contact & Career recruiting event, Study Visit to the institutions of European Union and of course various parties!

2. How can I join?

Everyone studying law in Turku can become a member of ELSA Turku. ELSA membership is universal so you can join any ELSA events around the world regardless of which local group you belong to. However, if you are an exchange student we recommend you to join the local group of your home country because it might be more beneficial for you. You can still participate in our activities in Turku.

The membership of ELSA Turku costs 20 euros that you can pay for the bank account of ELSA with a reference number 4103. After payment you should also fill in a form on our web page. More information: http://elsa-turku.fi/in-english/.

If you are eager to receive some more information on ELSA events in Turku and Finland please send an email to Sofia Engblom  ( smmeng@utu.fi ). There are also infomails in Finnish that you can receive by sending an email, including your name and email address, to: vpmarketing@elsa-turku.fi.

3. Come & meet us!

Got interested? Great! Please come and meet us for pre-drinks on January 28th at Lex’s office at 7p.m. Lex’s office is located at Ylioppilastalo B, inside the courtyard, next to pub “Proffan Kellari”. You are also welcome to join us for the afterparty at Lex’s own clubhouse. Clubhouse’s address is Kirkkotie 14 (same building as the Siwa shop). You’ll have a great opportunity to get to know more about ELSA and Lex, and most importantly, meet other Law students!

Please join the Facebook event “Pre-drinks for International Students!” so we know how many people are coming.

At the open office hours you can get to know some of the ELSA Turku members, ask questions about our activities or just sip a free cup of hot coffee!
