​As a tutor you'll have an opportunity to help new international degree students to settle in a student life in Turku, share your experiences and learn about new cultures. You will also help the student with all kinds of practical matters upon their arrival.

Application period for tutoring is 1 - 28 February 2018.
Tutor training day is 24 April 2018.

If you know Finnish well you can also tutor exchange students. More information about tutoring exchange students here. 

Your most important task as a tutor is to help the incoming students to adapt to the Finnish culture, student life and the University of Turku campus. You make sure that the students you tutor visit the faculty's Master's degree programme coordinator, participate in the orientation and pick up their UTU account details from an IT Service Desk. In addition, you can help significantly with all kinds of practical matters.

Tutors are an irreplaceable help in the welcoming process of new students!

Welcome to international tutoring!

Tutor's Duties

Contact the student before arrival
Check that the student has applied for housing and paid the security deposit
Collect the key to his/her apartment before arrival
Finding out when s/he is coming, meeting the student upon arrival
Help with all kinds of practical matters e.g.:

- Signing the lease 
- Banking issues

- Paying the student union fee and ordering the student card
- Registration at the faculty office
- Getting a bus card from the Public transport office

Show the most important places at the university (libraries, lecture halls, IT services, student cafeterias, FSHS…) and in the city (shops, libraries, flea markets…)
Tell about student life and free time activities in Turku and introduce the student to different student organizations

The application period for international tutors is usually in February - in 2018 it is 1-28 February.

What is required from you?

You can be a tutor if you are currently enrolled in a degree programme at the University of Turku and want to help new international students to integrate into the student life in Finland. To become a tutor, you'll have to participate in the training and be prepared to work at the beginning of the semester when the students arrive. 

Training

The training is common to exchange and international degree student tutors and takes place in April: 24 April 2018. There are also two voluntary meetings in August for last moment tips and discussion. 

In the training

the services and support services of the University of Turku and the Student Union are introduced.
the role of the tutor, internationality and practical matters are discussed.
you get a chance to meet other tutors of international degree students.
tutors receive the Student Union and its International Committee's guidebook for international tutors.

The Beginning of the Academic Year

New international degree students are expected to arrive in August-September. The orientation takes place in the beginning of September.
