TYY-TuKY Student Union Council elections 2009
The University of Turku (UTU) and Turku School of Economics (TES) will merge at the beginning of 2010. As a result, the Student Unions of the University of Turku (TYY) and Turku School of Economics (TuKY) will also merge. Elections for the 41-member Student Union Council of the new Student Union of the University of Turku will be held from 6 to 7 April 2009. These elections will be for the student members of TYY and TuKY. The activities of the newly elected Student Union Council will begin in August 2009.
Elected Student Union Council and term
Members and deputy members will be elected for the 41-member Student Union Council of the Student Union of the University of Turku, which will begin on 1 January 2010, according to the Election Regulations approved by the TYY Student Union Council and the TuKY Student Parliament. The elected Student Union Council's term will run from August 2009 until the end of 2011.
Official election days, voting stations and online voting
The official election days will be held on 6 and 7 April 2009. The voting stations will be at:
- Educarium (Assistentinkatu 5, 1st floor)
- Juslenia (Henrikinkatu 2, 1. krs)
- Natural Sciences Building I (University Hill)
- Mikro (Kiinamyllynkatu 13, 1st floor)
- Turku School of Economics (Rehtorinpellonkatu 3, 1st floor)
The voting stations will be open on both days from 10.00 to 15.00.
Online voting will be available starting at 10.00 on 6 April until 18.00 on 7 April. The link to online voting will be available on the webpages of TYY and TuTY www.tyy.fi ja www.tuky.fi. Online voting will also be available during advance voting days.
Advance voting
Advance voting will be available from 31 March until 1 April at the University of Turku Main Library (Main Library, 1st floor, University Hill). The voting station will be open on both days from 10.00 to 15.00. Online advance voting will be available starting 10.00 on 31 March until 24.00 on 1 April.
Right to vote, eligibility and voting
Every member of the Student Union of the University of Turku and the Student Union of Turku School of Economics, who are registered as attending, has the right to vote and be a candidate in the Student Union Council elections. The right to vote will be seen in the electoral roll. Every voter has the right to only one vote and he or she may cast his or her own vote. Voters must present official proof of identification when voting.
Electoral roll
The electoral roll will be published 23 February on the official TYY and TuKY notice boards. A person that fulfils the terms of voting rights, who is not on the roll, must register with the Central Election Committee Secretary if he or she wants to be entered in the electoral roll.
Becoming a candidate
In order to be a candidate, you must submit an accurately filled out and signed Declaration of Candidature, which has been confirmed by the Central Election Committee, to the TYY Service Desk on the 1st floor of Student House A (Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 A, 20500 Turku) no later than 10 March by 12.00.
Establishing a coalition
Two or more candidates have the right to establish a coalition. No more than 82 candidates may belong to the same coalition. In order to form a coalition, you must submit an accurately filled out and signed Founding Document for a Coalition in the TYY Elections, which has been confirmed by the Central Election Committee, to the TYY Service Desk on the 1st floor of Student House A (Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 A, 20500 Turku) no later than 10 March by 12.00.
Establishing an electoral alliance
Coalitions and individual candidates may form an electoral alliance. In order to form an electoral alliance, you must submit an accurately filled out and signed Agreement to Form an Electoral Alliance, which has been confirmed by the Central Election Committee, to the TYY Service Desk on the 1st floor of Student House A (Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 A, 20500 Turku) no later than 10 March by 12.00.
Candidate list
The list of candidates will be published on 13 March 2009 on the TYY and TuKY notice boards at 12.00.
Election advertisement
Election advertisement is regulated by the Ethical Rules of the Student Union Council elections approved by the Central Election Committee.
Publishing election results
Unofficial election results will be announced on 7 April as soon as possible after the elections have ended. The official results will be published on the official TYY and TuKY notice boards, 21 April at the latest.
Documents concerning the elections and more information
Election forms (Declaration of Candidature, Founding Document for a Coalition in the TYY Elections and Agreement to Form an Electoral Alliance), Ethical Rules of the Student Union Council elections and Election Regulations (currently in Finnish only) are available on the TYY webpages. Forms are also available at the TYY and TuKY offices. As long as they comply with the Election Regulations, and are in writing, documents do not have to be written out on the forms made out by the Central Election Committee. These forms will be valid for submission.
