 WHAT IS MID-WEEK MAIL?

Mid-Week Mail is a bi-monthly news and events e-mail for the international students of the University of Turku. Aside from being an important up-to-date news source concerning Student Union, university and student issues, Mid-Week Mail also gives you current information on different events and activities organised by TYY (the Student Union of the University of Turku), the TYY Committees and other TYY affiliates.

ANNA MÄKIPÄÄ SELECTED TO SYL EXECUTIVE BOARD FOR 2011

The Student Union of the University of Turku Executive Board member, Philosophy student Anna Mäkipää has been selected for the National Union of University Students in Finland Executive Board for 2011. The SYL union conference selected unaffiliated Mäkipää as a member out of eight candidates on Saturday, 20 November. The executive board for SYL consists of a chairperson, and six board members.

23 year old Mäkipää has experience in a number of memberships in he Student Union and in university administration. In addition, she works in professional lobbying in the field of her studies as a member of the student committee of the Finnish Union of Experts in Science.

The National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) is a student organisation which represents 135,000 students and postgraduates. SYL is a registered association whose members are all of the university student unions in Finland. The union conference, which convenes once a year, works as the union’s highest decision-making body.

INDEPENDENCE DAY TORCHLIGHT PROCESSION ON 6.12.

The student unions in Turku will be organising an emotional torchlight procession on Monday 6 December from the Student Houses to the heroes’ graves of Turku Cemetery. We will go to the graveyard in one large procession with torches. Upon arrival, we will hear music and sing the Finnish national anthem Maamme. Transport by bus to go back to the Student Houses will be available.

We will gather in front of Student House A at 17.30 and set off around 17.50. Going to the graves will take approximately 45 minutes. Dress code: dark smart casual, according to the weather.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR TYY COMMITTEE ON SUB-ORGANISATIOS AND TYY STUDENT CAFETERIA COMMITTEE EXTENDED

A decision was made to extend the application deadline to fill the seats in the TYY Committee on Sub-Organisations and TYY Student Cafeteria Committee. The new deadline is 6 December at 12.00. Applications can only be received online and can be found at http://www.tyy.fi/node/1477.

TYY Committee on Sub-Organisations (4 seats to be filled)

The purpose of the Committee on Sub-Organisations is to develop and improve the requirements of sub-organisation activity. The committee’s duties include managing its liaison to the sub-organisations, participation in handling activity support and also participation in various projects with the TYY sub-organisation sector.

TYY Student Cafeteria Committee (6 seats to be filled)

The Student Cafeteria Committee oversees the advantages of students and other patrons in the cafeterias and cafés owned by TYY and sees to paying attention to student opinions.

TRADITIONAL GERMAN CHRISTMAS CAROLS AT TURKU CATHEDRAL ON 4 DECEMBER

Traditional German Christmas Carols will be sung in the Turku Cathedral on 4 December at 14.30. The German ev.-luth. congregation welcomes you to the occasion and to come sing along!
