WHAT IS MID-WEEK MAIL?

Mid-Week Mail is a bi-monthly news and events e-mail for the international students of the University of Turku. Aside from being an important up-to-date news source concerning Student Union, university and student issues, Mid-Week Mail also gives you current information on different events and activities organised by TYY (the Student Union of the University of Turku), the TYY Committees and other TYY affiliates.

Collect a basket of friends - win a hot air balloon ride for six!

Party tip competition for students and student organisations!

What are the best group activities for freshmen, party themes, routines, methods for motivating and building up an atmosphere for a group? What makes a successful event? What works in your organisation?

You can take part in the competition until 1 March 2010.
The student or organisation that comes up with the best tip will be awarded with a hot air balloon rife for six. In addition, all the participants will be put in a drawing and are eligible to win a packet of movie tickets.

The aim of the competition is to find practical tips for student parties and events that doesn’t entirely revolve around alcohol (or wouldn’t even be present at all). The tips will be compiled in a list, by theme, to be utilised by the student organisations.

JARMO KALLUNKI: SYL EDUCATIONAL OFFICER

TYY Executive Board Vice Chair and member for academic affairs Jarmo Kallunki will be the next SYL Educational Officer. He will start working at the SYL central office in Helsinki on 1 March. A new Executive Board member will be selected at the Student Union Council meeting on 24 February. Subsequently, the Executive Board will get reorganised and reconsider its members’ areas of responsibility.

NEW EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER FOR THE STUDENT UNION SELECTED

The Student Council has in its meeting on 24 February granted a resignation for TYY Executive Board member Jarmo Kallunki. In the same meeting the Student Union Council selected a new member to replace him. The new board member selected is Anna Mäkipää, who is a 23-year-old mathematics student. The Executive Board will reorganise and reconsider its members’ areas of responsibility in its meeting on 26 February.

SPR AURAJOKI SECTION: FIRST AID COURSE IN ENGLISH!

Would you like to learn first aid? Now you have a very good opportunity to learn these important skills. The Finnish Red Cross are going to have a First Aid course in English on March during four nights; March 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th from 17.30-20.45.

The price of the course is 85€. Students get 15% discount!

ACADEMIC CAREER SERVICES: STARTING A BUSINESS INFO SESSION

Turku Academic Career Services will be organising an info session on entrepreneurship on 4 March. The session will provide the participants with information and advice on the procedures and tasks that are required in order to establish a business in Finland. The info session is free of charge and open for all students, graduates and members of staff. STUDENT UNIONS ASK POLITICIANS TO TAKE STAND ON TUITION

University and polytechnic student unions want Finland’s political parties to take a clear stand on tuition fees before the next election. Unions say they’re floored by a working group’s proposal to charge tuition for higher learning.

TYY COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS MEETING ON 5 MARCH

The TYY Committee on International Affairs (Kansainvälinen valiokunta) organises and provides information about international activities. The Committee actively deals with matters of promoting the interests of international students. Erasmus Student Network (ESN), International Students of Turku Universities (ISTU) and other international associations work in close collaboration with the Committee.

The TYY Committee on International Affairs will have its next meeting on Friday 5 March at 12.00 in Turku-sali. The meetings of all TYY Committees are open for everyone. You are welcome to attend the meeting!
