MID-WEEK MAIL WISHES YOU A GOOD START TO AUTUMN

The University of Turku and TYY buzzes with excitement as a new academic
year begins. Mid-Week Mail also is coming back to give you information
about current events in your inbox every other Wednesday.

Mid-Week Mail is available for every TYY member and its collaborative
partners, so tell all your friends! Also, for example,
sub-organisations' chairs can send Mid-Week Mail to their boards.

CAKE DOES THE TRICK AT OPENING CARNIVAL

Instead of on University Hill, the TYY opening carnival was held in
front of the Student Houses this year and was brimming with students and
others to start off the academic year. The carnival atmosphere was
shared with TuKY as music and dance was offered along with cake and the
opportunity to get to know different TYY and TuKY sub-organisations.

University of Turku Rector Keijo Virtanen announced teacher and course
of the year for 2009. Faculty of Education lecturer Annukka Jauhiainen
was named teacher of the year and Fitness and Nutrition was given the
title of course of the year.

MEXICAN DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION PARTNERS VISIT TURKU

TYY's development cooperation partner organisation AJAGI will be
visiting Turku from 9 to 12 September. The info seminar, open to all
students, will be held in Turku-sali on Thursday, 10 September at 14.00.

On Thursday evening, Mexican band Wixarika will perform at coffee house
Turun Kirjakahvila, located in the inner courtyard of the Brinkkala
houses at the Old Market Square. The guests will then participate in a
discussion forum on Friday with the Department of Geology and on
Saturday, they will take part in Markets of Possibilities. There will be
an after party at Dynamo, where the audience will get the opportunity to
see the Mexican band again!

NEW SECRETARY FOR STUDENT ORGANISATIONS AND PR STARTS AT TYY

Sociology student Aapo Rantanen started his new position at TYY this
autumn as Secretary for Student Organisations and PR. Rantanen has
previously worked as Executive Board member for sub-organisations and PR
and has had seats in the Student Union Council and TYY Committees for
some years.

The TYY office crew would like welcome Aapo aboard!

Students can turn to the Secretary for Student Organisations and PR in
any question concerning sub-organisations including all kinds of legal
and financial matters. He can also help in filling out, for example,
applications for activity and project support. In addition to these
duties, the Secretary for Student Organisations and PR arranges training
sessions for student organisation actors.

PROCEEDS OF INTERNATIONAL CHARITY FLEA MARKET

The TYY Committee on International Affairs organised a charity flea
market where household items, donated by old exchange and other
students, were sold to new international students. All the proceeds of
the flea market, held in Turku-sali, went to the Zimbabwe Aids Orphans
organisation which helps orphans who lost their families to Aids.

BECOME A MEMBER OF TYY COMMITTEE ON INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS

TYY is searching for members for the Committee on International Affairs.

TYY Committee on International Affairs advances internationality,
tolerance and multiculturalism at the University of Turku campus. The
Committee cooperates with the Erasmus Student Network (ESN TYY),
International Students of Turku Universities (ISTU) and other
international organisations.

The Committee helps the international sector of the Student Union to
organise happenings and to inform about the happenings on its line of
activities. The Committee aims to develop the international mobility of
the students, works on the special student interests and the position of
informing in English.

TYY SEARCHES FOR SECRETARY FOR INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS STAND-IN

TYY Secretary for International Affairs Heidi Tukia will be going on
study leave at the beginning of November. TYY is searching for a
Secretary for International Affairs for a stand-in term from 1 November
2009 until 31 October 2010.

Duties of the Secretary for International Affairs include counselling,
services and handling the special interests of international students
and other TYY members, working as supervisor of project secretaries of
the international and development cooperation sectors, PR on
international affairs, coordination of TYY development cooperation
projects, organising events, administrative assignments and other jobs
given my the Secretary General. Excellent Finnish and English-language
skills are required for the job.

TURKU STUDENT NEWSPAPER SEARCHES FOR EDITOR-IN-CHIEF STAND-IN

TYY is searching for an Editor-in Chief for Turku Student Newspaper for
a stand-in term from 4 January until 14 May 2010.

The Editor-in Chief will be responsible for the spring 2010 publication
of Turku Student Newspaper. Duties of the Editor-in Chief include work
as the managing superior of the reporters of the paper, overseeing the
paper's content, following the budget and the paper layout. In addition
the Editor-in Chief, a reporter intern and a reporter doing non-military
service work at the paper as well as a broad number of collaborators.

Free-form applications must be submitted with a CV by 12.00, Friday 2

Turku Student Newspaper is a publication of the Student Union of the
University of Turku with 16 issues during the autumn and spring
semesters. There are 10,000 copies in circulation.

UNIVERSITY OF TURKU BOARD SEEKS STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE

The University of Turku's highest decision-making body is its 18-member
Board to which the Student Union names five of its members. The Board
develops university operation as well as:

1. approves the financial plan and plan of action as well as other
far-reaching plans
2. decides on the division of allowances
3. gives statements on important matters concerning the university
4. approves the University Regulations and other similar rules

A deputy student member is needed for the University of Turku Board for
a term ending 31 January 2010. In the advocating of equality, a female
applicant is considered a plus. There are currently nine male and one
female student members on the Board.

Free-form, signed applications along with a CV, addressed to the Student
Union of the University of Turku, must be submitted by Friday, 18
September 2009, no later than 12.00. Applications may be submitted at
the TYY Service Desk or sent by post to Rehtorinpellonkatu 4 A, 20500
