STUDENT UNION COUNCIL APPROVES UPDATED FINANCIAL STRATEGY AND REJECTS
LANGUAGE STRATEGY PROPOSAL

Last Wednesday's Student Union Council was the last meeting for spring
and the longest to date. Up on the agenda was the approval of the
financial strategy and the language strategy. There were preliminary
debates on both documents at the previous meeting in April.

The updated financial strategy was presented by the TYY Financial Board.
There were quite a few motions for changes in the document. The Student
Union Council went through each section and voted on each motion one at
a time. In the end, the financial strategy was unanimously approved.

The language strategy committee, appointed by the Student Union Council
last autumn, presented the TYY language strategy with revisions based on
comments given in April's preliminary debate. Even with numerous
arguments from members speaking on behalf of its approval, the Student
Union Council decided that there is no need for the language strategy to
be in the form in which it appears. The strategy was rejected by a vote
of 18-17 and two undecided votes. It was suggested, however, that
instead of approving it as a strategy, the issues in the document could
be added to the political agenda and plan of action so that the
committee's work would not go to waste.

On the proposal of the selection committee, the Student Union Council
gave its proposal on the University of Turku collegiate body's student
members. Also at the meeting, Maija Soini was made the new member of the
Financial Aid Board and Otto Lehikoinen was named the new chair of the
TYY Committee on International Affairs.

TYY MAKES STATEMENT ON SEPARATE STUDENT SELECTION CRITERIA

The TYY Executive Board made as statement in response to a request at
last Friday's meeting for the University of Turku to give an explanation
about separate student selection criteria. In addition to separate
selection criteria, the statement request asked that there would be a
stand taken for education that leads to a Bachelor's degree only.

According to the TYY political agenda, the extension of the Open
University route is not considered as a good idea. TYY sees separate
selection criteria as problematic because through these criteria, it is
possible to get around the principle of free education.

The view on granting the right to study directly for a Master's degree
was also expressed in the statement in accordance with the political
agenda. TYY sees that student selection directly for a higher education
Master's degree is in the agenda with the notion that the University of
Turku will still be strongly profiled in the future as a research
university.

The entire statement can be viewed at http://tyy.fi/node/468 (in Finnish)
