FINNISH FOR FUN

Word variations, such as shortening and so-called slag derivations are common in almost a ll languages. These words are not always considered "official" as e.g. in a dictionary. Slang words however are used in
everyday life:

Tylkkäri (<- Turun ylioppilaslehti) = Turku Student Newspaper
Edari (<- edustajisto) = Student Union Council
Stokka (<- Stockmann)
Hesari (<- Helsingin Sanomat)
Hese (<- Hesburger)
Hesa (<- Helsinki)

However, businesses can use any word they like in their own official
registration. Take these Unica student cafeterias for example:

Assarin ullakko (assari <- assistentti) = the assistant's attic
Proffan kellari (proffa <- professori) = the professor's cellar/basement
Parkkis (<- parkkialue) = car park
