INTERNATIONAL SECTOR UPDATE

TYY Secretary for International Affairs, Heidi and TYY Board member for international affairs, Leila have been working on the social affairs of international students. They met personnel of University Sports last week to discuss sport activities offered in English and the information given on sport services in English. They also met the Manager of Housing Affairs from TYS to discuss the housing of international students.

Another current issue is the language strategy that the language strategy working group is now preparing. The purpose is to provide a document for the Student Union Council to approve, which defines the position of the English language at TYY.

To find out more about these current issues, please contact Heidi (tyy-kvsihteeri@utu.fi) or Leila (tyy-kv@utu.fi).

NEW TYY WEBPAGES UP AND RUNNING

The brand new TYY webpages are now available at http://tyy.fi.

All of the TYY sub-organisations can soon take part in updating the new webpages through their own pages. There will be a page created for sub-organisations where they will be able to write about their activities and attach their own logos and photos. Also, a link will be available on the pages to each sub-organisation’s own webpage. User IDs for updating the pages will be issued during the spring and the sub-organisations’ representatives will be taught how to update them.

The sub-organisations will also soon be able to include their bigger events to a common events calendar on the webpages.

The address of new front page will stay the same. However, please make sure to update any possible links to the TYY webpages that may be on your organisation’s website.

VANS FOR HIRE FOR TYY MEMBERS AND SUB-ORGANISATIONS

For financial reasons, TYY is giving up its car and has made a contract with rental company Turun Pakuvuokraus to make up for it. Pakuvuokraus offers vans at an affordable price for hire. Not only will this service be available to TYY sub-organisations but also all TYY members will be able to take advantage of this service (e.g. to help with moving).

The special prices for TYY members and more information will be available on the new webpages at: (now in Finnish at http://www.tyy.fi/alayhdistykset/palvelut-yhdistyksille/tilat-ja-auto)

Unlike before when the car rental was done with the TYY Secretary for Student Organisations and PR, TYY members must contact Turun Pakuvuokraus directly. When signing the rental contract, make sure you have your student card with you to show you are a valid member of TYY.

For more information, contact TYY Secretary for Student Organisations and PR Mikko Soukkanen, tyy-jarjestosihteeri@utu.fi.

FINNISH FOR FUN

The group of personal male’s names that includes the English name John (and its equivalents in practically every language e.g. German Hans, French Jean, Italian Giovanni, Russian Ivan, Scottish Ian) is one of the most common worldwide. This ancient name originates from the Hebrew name Jochanan which means “Jahve is merciful” or “God is good”.

The name Johannes in Finnish came from Swedish. However, many regions in Finland have adapted their own variant of the name or shortened Swedish variants:

Juha, Juhana, Juhani, Juho (from Swedish Johan)

Jussi (from Swedish Jusse)

Janne (from Swedish Jahan)

Jani (Southern and Central Northern Finland)

Joni, Jouni (Northern Finland, Upper-Ostrobothnia to Lapland)

Jonne, Jonni (Uusimaa and Lapland)

Jukka, Jukko (Eastern Finland)

Johukka, Juko, Juna, Juni, Junu, Junukka, Juska, Juta, Juti, Jutikka, Jutu (South-Eastern Finland)
